Conservation scientists are increasingly recognizing the need to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions to improve human–wildlife coexistence across different contexts. Here we assessed the long-term efficacy of the Long Shields Community Guardians programme in Zimbabwe. This community-based programme seeks to protect livestock and prevent depredation by lions Panthera leo through non-lethal means, with the ultimate aim of promoting human–lion coexistence. Using a quasi-experimental approach, we measured temporal trends in livestock depredation by lions and the prevalence of retaliatory killing of lions by farmers and wildlife managers. Farmers that were part of the Long Shields programme experienced a significant reduction in livestock loss to lions, and the annual number of lions subject to retaliatory killing by farmers dropped by 41% since the start of the programme in 2013, compared to 2008–2012, before the programme was initiated. Our findings demonstrate the Long Shields programme can be a potential model for limiting livestock depredation by lions. More broadly, our study demonstrates the effectiveness of community-based interventions to engage community members, improve livestock protection and ameliorate levels of retaliatory killing, thereby reducing human–lion conflict.

The origin of the far-infrared emission from the nearby radio galaxy M87 remains a matter of debate. Some studies find evidence of a far-infrared excess due to thermal dust emission, whereas others propose that the far-infrared emission can be explained by synchrotron emission without the need for an additional dust emission component. We observed M87 with PACS and SPIRE as part of the Herschel Virgo Cluster Survey (HeViCS). We compare the new Herschel data with a synchrotron model based on infrared, submm and radio data to investigate the origin of the far-infrared emission. We find that both the integrated SED and the Herschel surface brightness maps are adequately explained by synchrotron emission. At odds with previous claims, we find no evidence of a diffuse dust component in M87.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multi-system disorder belonging to the connective tissue group of diseases characterized by circulating non-organ-specific autoantibodies. Its incidence may be increasing and, as milder cases are recognized, it is becoming a condition likely to be encountered in many medical settings. The peak onset is during the child-bearing years when the sex ratio approaches 13:1 in favour of females. Fertility rates are normal and hence pregnancy becomes a common management problem in this group of patients.

The Garbage Project has excavated eight sanitary landfulls from California to Florida and analyzed 6.71 metric tons of refuse deposited between 1952 and 1988. While the ultimate goal of this continuing endeavor is to collect archaeological data on contemporary discards using a methodology that will link our society to the past, this initial report relates Garbage Project data to three issues of current public concern. This first applied archaeology of landfills has identified: (1) the contents of specific landfills and possible refinements for "national" estimates of U.S. landfill contents; (2) a link between moisture level and rate of refuse decomposition; and (3) part of the pathway of migration for heavy metals.

Summary
INTRODUCTION
The Editors
In the previous chapter, various methods of enhancing the climate signal in tree-ring chronologies have been mentioned. In order to reconstruct climate, it is necessary to extract this signal – to separate climatic factors from the many other environmental variables limiting the plant processes which control growth. The climate-growth response is complex, and reliable theoretical models have yet to be developed. Semi-empirical techniques have, therefore, been developed in order to extract the climate signal. Response functions are used to describe associations between climate data and annual ring measurements. Transfer functions are used to calibrate the ring measurements with climate data in order to provide regression equations for climate reconstruction. Both techniques employ multivariate statistical methods such as principal component or eigenvector analysis and canonical correlation and regression.
The response of the growth of trees to climate and other environmental factors is discussed by Fritts. He highlights the need for semi-empirical techniques to define and extract the macroclimatic signal from tree-ring chronologies. The response function provides an empirical method of describing the nature of the climatic factors that influence tree growth. As Hughes and Milsom point out, the response function does not measure the climategrowth response but rather the effectiveness of a particular statistical model at predicting the element of tree-ring variation forced by external factors. The response function has proved to be a valuable tool for analysing the climate-growth relationship. Guiot, Berger and Munaut review various methods of calculating response functions.
